چکیده

In this study, we conducted attachment experiments and electrophoretic mobility titrations to investigate the mechanisms of attachment of Escherichia coli K12 onto quartz surfaces. Attachment experiments were performed as a function of pH in 0.01 M KNO3 and in the presence of 0.01 M Ca. Scanning electron microscopy and optical density measurements at 600 nm indicate significant pH dependant attachment of E. coli onto quartz surfaces. Electrophoretic mobility experiments performed as a function of pH in 0.01 M KNO3 with and without Ca demonstrated that the magnitude of the zeta potential decreased with the introduction of Ca for E. coli, but had little effect on the surface properties of quartz. These results indicate that the association of hard acid divalent cations with bacterial cells walls may influence the mechanisms and extent of their attachment onto mineral surfaces.

The complexation of Alkali metal cations by the water-soluble p-sulfonic acid calix(4)arenewas thermodynamically characterized using spectrophotometeric data which are consistentwith the formation of a 1:1 complex resulting from electrostatic interactions between thesulfonato groups and alkali metal cations. In this study, we determined the formationconstants (log K) of the complexes and have c...

Calixarenes are a readily available and important class of macrocycles in supramolecularchemistry. Calixarenes have generated considerable interest due to their basket shaped structureand as useful building blocks to synthesize selective receptors for the guest species, notably alkali, alkaline earth, lanthanide and transition metal cations. In this work studied on the complexingproperties of a ...

A Semi-Empirical Study on Metal Ion/Murexide Complexation

Computational chemistry has recently introduced the improved reaction field theory and now is capable of evaluating the bulk solvent effect quite accurately. It is time to expand this capability to mixed solvents, as it is often extremely useful through is still not well understood. For example, the determination of rates of complexations of divalent metal ions with a tridentate metal-ion indic...

Sensitivity of Surface Complexation Modeling to the Surface Site Density Parameter

Previous research has shown that adsorption of many inorganic anions on soil mineral surfaces can be described equally well by chemical surface complexation models using either inneror outer-sphere surface complexes. At the same time, goodness of fit of these models to adsorption data has been used to distinguish between innerand outer-sphere adsorption mechanisms. In this study the ability of ...
